More than 2,000 indigenous peoples from around the world have gathered in New York.

They are participating in a two-week session of the UN Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues which opened on Monday.

One of the participants is Dr. Mirna Cunningham of the Miskito people of Nicaragua and a member of the Forum.

Dianne Penn first asked her about the Miskito people who live in the north-eastern part of Nicaragua.
