The United Nations recognizes that the least developed countries, known as the LDCs, need special international support to get out of poverty.

More than 880 million people in the world live in these countries, the majority of which are in Africa.

So, as the UN Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) holds its conference in Doha, Qatar, which is convened once in every four years, the issue of the LCDs is on the agenda.

UN Radio’s Xingpu Yuan caught up with Cheick Sidi Diarra the top UN official dealing with LDCs who participated in a discussion of these countries.

Mr. Diarra first spoke about the criteria for the LDCs to graduate from that status to become ‘developing countries’.
