The UN Special Rapporteur on violence against Women is calling on the Solomon Islands and Papua New Guinea to do a better job when it comes to protecting women.

Rashida Manjoo was recently in both places urging the governments to launch programmes that to keep women safe and reinforce the laws that govern violence against them.

The independent expert says accountability, rather than impunity, should become the norm for all acts of violence against women and that the responsibility to prevent violence, protect against violence, provide remedies for victims, and to punish perpetrators for all acts of violence against women, is primarily an obligation of the State.

Patrick Maigua spoke with Ms. Manjoo about this.
